Nous avons décidé avec les copains que nous passerions la première journée de l'année à la plage, puisque c'est l'un des avantages d'habiter à Mombasa. Nous devions finir la journée par un barbecue sur la plage. Chacun a amené ses légumes ou saucisses à griller, David et Darren étaient chargés de préparer le feu et de surveiller la grillade.
En attendant, que ça cuise, Alice et Birju ont initié Harry et Evah au frisbee. Après quelques ratées, les enfants ne se débrouillaient pas mal pour leur âge (4 ans et 2 ans et demi respectivement). Le frisbee a fini à l'eau 1 ou 2 fois, mais quand Alice a dû aller le chercher presqu'à la nage, il était temps d'arrêter. Cela n'a pas empêche Harry de se trouver un copain parmi les enfants qui se baignaient et de continuer à jouer.
Nous autres, on papotait en grignotant des chips pendant ce temps. Puis les légumes ont commencé à être cuits: les poivrons rouges, jaunes et verts, puis les épis de maïs, les pommes de terre, les tomates et les courgettes. Ensuite Alice s'est lancée dans la cuisson des saucisses.
Le ventre bien plein, nous avons pu admirer le coucher de soleil sur l'océan et la vieille ville de Mombasa.

We decided with our friends that we would spend the first day of the year on the beach, since it is one of the main attractions of living in Mombasa. We would end the day with a barbecue on the beach. Everyone brought their vegetables or sausages for the occasion, David and Darren were in charge of getting the fire started and monitor the barbecue.
As we were waiting for everything to cook, Alice and Birju decided to teach Harry and Evah how to play Frisbee. After a couple of misses, the children did well for their age (4 and 2 and half respectively). The Frisbee went into the water once or twice, but when Alice had to almost swim to go and get it, it was time to stop. This didn't stop Harry from finding a friend amongst the children swimming and carry on playing.
In the meantime, we were chatting and munching on crisps. Then the vegetables were ready: red, yellow and green peppers, then maize cobs, potatoes, tomatoes and courgettes. Following that, Alice started cooking the sausages.
With a full belly, we were able to contemplate the sunset over the ocean and the old Mombasa town.
